Samsung Gears Up for August Device Launch

Could it be the Note 8?

Samsung this week sent out invitations to a device launch event scheduled to take place in New York City next month. Though Samsung didn’t say outright what device would be center stage on August 23, the invitation does feature the basic outline of a phone with a blue stylus tapping the screen – the latter feature traditionally being a hallmark of Samsung’s Note series. A complementary press release also indicates the event will reveal “the ultimate multitasking device” for people who “move through barriers to do more of what matters to them.”

If the device is the Note 8 as expected, Samsung is right to make its event tagline “Do bigger things.”

The launch would mark the first release in the Note line since Samsung’s Note 7 fiasco. Though it initially received a warm response from the market, the Note 7 was on fire not long after – literally. An investigation by Samsung found reports of exploding and melting phones were caused by an issue with the device’s battery setup, and pledged to earn back the trust of consumers burned by the Note 7 – both physically and via recalls of the popular and expensive device around the world.

In the spring following the debacle, Samsung released its Galaxy S8 flagship to wide acclaim. The company has also since repackaged some Note 7 devices as the Note FE for distribution in South Korea. More on the latter here.
